About

What can a photograph do? Conjure a memory, raise laughter, evoke a tear and summon deep emotions. Images are powerful and that is why I love them. Recently I opened an email from my father. Attached was a picture of my mother and I from many years ago. I was four or five. My mom was playfully poking me in the stomach and grinning while biting her lower lip. Although I don’t remember the exact moment portrayed in the image, I have seen that expression may times. After breast cancer took her life a few years ago, images like this keep her with me.
I have always had a creative side. After studying Magazine Journalism and Communication Systems Management at Ohio University, I was drawn to the marraige of art and technology. The web was just starting to explode and I explored a career in web design as I paid my bills (and my dues) in the corporate world. Like many other photographers, my love affair with the camera really started after I had kids. I love learning and when I couldn’t find a web design or art class that fit into my “mom” schedule, I decided to take a photography class. I borrowed my dad’s old manual SLR Pentax camera, loaded some Ilford film, and I was hooked. Much to my surprise, I also fell in love with the dark room. The experience of bringing an image to life was magical.
I no longer shoot with film and my dark room is now digital, but the magic is still there. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
